Start with the same scope
A spare car key is not the same request as an all-keys-lost replacement, and changing a cylinder’s keying differs from replacing an entire lock. Describe the goal and quantities first. When comparing estimates, check that they include the same doors, keys, parts and functions.
Ask what the estimate includes
Clarify any visit charge, labor, replacement hardware and key cutting or programming. Ask what can be confirmed by phone and what depends on inspection. An estimate based on an incomplete description may need revision once the actual condition and compatibility are known.
Agree before extra work
If inspection changes the recommendation, ask for an explanation and the updated price before authorizing additional work. For a business or managed property, make sure the person who can approve the change is available. Do not assume that work outside the original request is included.
Keep a useful record
At completion, check the agreed functions and request an invoice identifying the work and charges. Ask about any applicable follow-up terms. For a rekey or business access change, record the affected openings and copies supplied so the new arrangement is clear.
